Searching the Ellis Island database

Ellis Island

Early view of Ellis Island

The Ellis Island databases are useful for researching your family’s first arrival in the United States.  There are various tools to make the process easier.  One of the best that I have used is Stephen Morse’s “Searching the Ellis Island Database in One Step“.  In addition to being able to search by name, this worksheet allows you to search by village in order to obtain emigrants from a specific village or town. Simply enter the village name, without the person’s name. Searching this way will bring up listings of persons whose name is misspelled and who otherwise may not be found.  The worksheet will not bring up all emigrants from the village, only those for which the database lists the village.  In many instances the Ellis Island database has misspelled the village name, so spelling variations may help. More listings can be found by searching the site by the person’s name.
